India’s rising Heart Disease epidemic

Heart Disease is soon going to become an epidemic in India. As if being diabetes capital of the world was not enough, India has also become coronary heart disease capital of the world. India will very shortly have the highest number of heart disease cases in the world.

The alarming part of this epidemic is the numbers of young people who are being afflicted. About 50% of all heart attacks in Indians occur to people under 50 years of age and about 25% of all heart attacks in Indian occur to people under 40 years of age. People living in cities are almost 3 times more prone to heart attacks than people living in villages and that’s mainly because of the lifestyle.

There is a 15-20 percent increase in strokes in the age group of 25 to 40. Since growing numbers of young people (both male and female) are suffering from coronary artery disease more and more, the future looks dangerous.

Apart from genetic factors, there are numerous unhealthy lifestyle choices that also increases the risk of developing heart disease. Some of them are:

Lack of physical activity can also result in some serious ailments like type 2 diabetes, obesity, blood clots and high blood pressure. And by becoming more active you can lower your blood pressure and boost your levels of good cholesterol.

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

So quitting is the only way that can prevent heart disease and stroke.
Excessive drinking also plays a major factor for high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Heavy alcohol consumption can also cause gastric problems, liver cirrhosis, liver cancer and pancreatitis. Since both Heavy drinking and Binge drinking can cause immediate problems the best method to prevent such grave ailments is to quit drinking.

The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity.

Higher Levels of Stress

Chronic stress weakens the immune system and exposes our body to elevated levels of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. Chronic stress may also damage the artery walls as it causes an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. So, if possible. avoid feelings of anger that cause heart rate and blood pressure to rise. And in order to lead a stress free life, practice yoga on a regular basis.

Diabetes

Just like smoking and drinking, diabetes also raises the risk of heart problems. High blood glucose from diabetes can damage blood vessels and the nerves that control heart. People with diabetes run the risk of heart disease at a younger age compared to people without diabetes. So, the best way to stay healthy is to maintain a healthy blood sugar level by managing your diabetes.

Above were few major causes of heart ailments and by adopting a healthy life style. Eating healthy food, reducing stress levels and doing regular exercise one can prevent the risk of heart attack. Since men are more likely to have heart ailments when compared to women, the best way to protect from heart diseases is to undergo frequent health check-ups.
